COMMONWEALTH GAMES: Up against the traditional netball powerhouse that is Northern Ireland last night, the Australian Diamonds netball team just snuck home in a close contest. The fast-finishing Northern Irelanders threatened to take the win in the second half but just fell short, with the Aussies taking the win 94 to 26.
While local netball expert Pam Johnson told The Watsonia Bugle that the Northern Ireland side would “Struggle to win a game on Thursday night down at Banyule NETS stadium”, other observers suggested that the scoreboard didn’t tell the full story of last night’s Commonwealth Games clash. One observer noted, “They looked alright I reckon. The slow start probably cost them.”
The Diamonds will look to add to last night’s lucky win with another match tonight against Barbados at 8.30pm. While the brave Northern Ireland squad will have a well-earned rest before facing South Africa on Saturday afternoon at 3.00pm.
