A local golf enthusiast has taken to Twitter to express his empathy for Sergio Garcia after the defending champion notched up 13 shots on the 15th hole at the US Masters this morning. In borderline comical scenes, Garcia repeatedly chipped balls onto the 15th green before helplessly watching them roll back off the dancefloor and into a nearby water hazard.
While the blow-out has no doubt cost Garcia any chance of defending his title at Augusta, self-proclaimed weekend hacker Michael Stephens this morning tweeted, “We’ve all been there Serge, so I feel for ya mate. I recently had a 13 on the par-4 9th at Royal Strathallan. And there’s not even water on that course… #notwinning #thestruggleisreal”.
When contacted by The Watsonia Bugle, Stephens explained how he recorded such a high score on a seemingly straight forward hole. He said, “You wouldn’t believe it mate. I had an eight-stroke lead coming into the final hole of a cheeky round with my mate Woz during daylight saving a month ago. My drive was alright, but then my approach hit sand. From there I just went backwards and forwards across the green from bunker to bloody bunker. Nek minnit I have a 13, Woz tin arses a par, and I lose the round. It was a joke.”
