A young Watsonia woman’s mother has spectacularly misunderstood what the term “side hustle” means, leading to some unfounded accusations and an enormous amount of awkwardness at their family’s Sunday lunch. Rebecca O’Sullivan was in the middle of explaining the hours she puts into a side venture of hers where she writes social media captions for a small business when she said to everyone, “It’s the perfect side hustle for me, you know. The pay is decent, I can work my own hours, and I can even do it from the comfort of my own bed.”

Up until overhearing that statement, Rebecca’s mum Anne had been in a different conversation at the table, but her ears pricked up when she heard the term “side hustle”. She then launched into a searching tirade towards her youngest daughter, simultaneously questioning her ethics, morals and future ability to find a long-term partner.

Clearly aware of the misunderstanding taking place, Rebecca’s brother Ben quickly defused the situation by explaining to his mum what a side hustle was. However, the damage had already been done in Rebecca’s eyes, and she constantly glared at her mother for the remainder of the lunch. And they have not exchanged so much as a text message between each other since.

Speaking exclusively to The Watsonia Bugle, Ben said, “Haha, I couldn’t believe it, eh. Mum just went postal cos she thought Bec was selling her body to the night. Classic.”
