Following this morning’s shock announcement that Hawthorn superstar Cyril Rioli has retired, commentator Bruce McAvaney’s phone has reportedly been going mad. The litany of calls have been a combination of news outlets trying to get a quick grab from the well-known Cyril appreciator, and close friends checking in to see if Bruce is okay about the news.

A source close to McAvaney told The Watsonia Bugle this morning, “His phone literally has not stopped ringing. It’s madness. Everyone wants to hear Bruce’s take on the news. I’m just worried he won’t be able to process the enormity of this moment until tomorrow when, hopefully, the calls die down. He’s become so intrinsically linked with Cyril that everyone is just making the same connection.”

While Bruce is yet to answer any of our calls, we assume he’ll get back to us when the madness subsides. Until then he will need to decide whether to retire the description of “special” from his AFL calls as a mark of respect for the man that inspired the popular piece of footy speak.
