Greensborough’s very own Lance “Buddy” Franklin has added All Australian captain to his already impressive CV which includes two premierships, and four Coleman Medals. The captaincy all but confirms Franklin’s status as the Diamond Valley’s most decorated AFL export, narrowly edging out Hall of Fame Legend Gordon Coventry, and Hawthorn star – turned media talent – Daniel Harford.

“Greensborough’s own Buddy Franklin” we hear you ask? Isn’t he originally from Western Australia? Well, quite simply, you’re wrong. You see, Franklin’s father – Lance Franklin Snr – once played footy for Greensborough when he was a young bloke, before moving to WA at the age of 21. We read it once on a Big Footy thread, so it’s widely accepted as a proper truth fact.

So, in the grand Australian tradition of claiming people as our own – just like that great Aussie horse Phar Lap, Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe and, oddly, “Aussie Kim Clijsters” – it’s not unreasonable to consider Buddy Franklin as yet another top notch footy product raised on the fertile sporting fields of the Diamond Valley. Congrats Buddy, it’s always good to see a local boy do well on the world stage.
