Watsonia North has officially been named the coolest and most bestest Melbourne suburb to live in… if you’re not, like, kind of rich and that. The city-wide survey, conducted by People’s Choice, analysed all Melbourne suburbs at or under the median house price of $750,000 and then ranked them in order of their liveability.
Watsonia North received the coveted top ranking, while nearby suburbs Yallambie and Wattle Glen also ranked in the top four. The result is a timely boost for the peaceful enclave of Watsonia North, following a rough 12 months that has included a brutal Elton John snub, being rated as one of Melbourne’s “least walkable” suburbs, and missing out on their very own train station.
While residents are pleased with the result, some have questioned elements of the article that announced the top placing, specifically the part that referenced Watsonia North’s “developing cafe culture”. One anonymous resident scoffed, “Developing café culture? In Watsonia North? Seriously? I mean, my next door neighbour got one of them wizzbang coffee machines a few months ago, but I’d hardly say that qualifies as a ‘developing café culture’.
Meanwhile, south of Grimshaw Street, residents of Watsonia proper have woken a little saltier than normal this morning, with many of them dismissing the latest ranking. Claire Donovan said, “Watsy North, the best in Melbourne? What a joke. They’re just piggybacking on Watsonia, mate. Without us, Watsonia North is nothing, and you can quote me on that.”
