A Watsonia man has felt a cheap thrill while reminiscing about covert visits to the adults only section at What’s New in Greensborough Plaza back in the day. The man, who requested strict anonymity, said that in his early adolescence, during the early-90s, he and his friends would casually stroll the aisles of What’s New to avert suspicion, before stopping for a quick peruse of the edgy merchandise on offer.
Reflecting on the experience, the local man said, “To be honest, we had no idea what we were looking at most of the time, but the thrill was in the act more than the outcome. One time we even got moved on by the guy that worked there, haha, that was a classic moment!”
While conceding that he was glad his own children were not exposed to such risqué retail experiences at the Plaza these days, he insisted that his own experiences were an important rite of passage. He said, “Those visits formed a cornerstone of my education into all things adult. You’ve got to remember we didn’t have the Internet back then, so you really had to think on your feet to see what was out there in the wider world.”
