Despite being more than a week into the month of December, summer officially commenced at 11.00am this morning when ABC Grandstand began their ball-by-ball commentary of the First Test in Brisbane. Better even than Thirsty Merc’s “In The Summertime”, aural aesthetic of ABC’s cricket commentary playing through the radio is the quintessential sound of summer.
No matter where you are, or what you’re doing, the calm discussion amongst commentators over the gentle hum of background crowd noise transports you to every summer you’ve ever experienced. When that unmistakable beep beep sound comes across, you know another hour has passed, and you’ll soon be interrupted by the news.
