A local artist has skilfully recreated an ancient insignia and started etching it on everything. Darren Carmine decided to bring back the heavily stylised letter “S” after discovering one of his old sketchbooks from the 1990s.

Speaking exclusively to The Watsonia Bugle, Carmine said, “It’s an abstract representation of the deep nuances of growing up in suburban Melbourne during the 90s. Sure, that ‘S’ is seen by many as just a branding device for Stussy, but it means so much more to the generation that lived it.”

Carmine continued, “For many of us, that ‘S’ represents our first foray into the visual arts. Its raw beauty is in its simplicity. Like a drop punt for a footballer, it may seem vanilla to the uninitiated, but its purity is what makes it so special.”
