Residents of both Watsonia North and Greensborough are growing increasingly anxious over the future of the spooky pedestrian tunnel that connects the two suburbs. The thoroughfare, which runs under the Greensborough Bypass, has become a beloved local icon, once attracting avid Game of Thrones fans, and another time being on the frontline of social distancing rules.

However, the long-term future of the tunnel remains unclear, with eagle-eyed locals questioning how it can remain with the current work being done to build the North East Link. According to keen powerwalker Doris Branson, if the NEL needs to dig below the intersection at Grimshaw Street, the popular tunnel might be no longer.

Speaking to The Watsonia Bugle, Branson said, “I just don’t see how it can stay. Sure, they might replace it with a pedestrian overpass, but there’s something special about that tunnel. It really gets the heartrate going when you walk through it. And I don’t want to have to climb a million stairs to get up to an overpass just so I can walk over to Greensborough. My Garmin watch only counts steps, not elevation.”
