A local piece of artwork presumably intended to discourage graffiti has ended up achieving the complete opposite: now seemingly challenging spray can–toting hooligans to get creative with their wordplay. The artwork, which faces onto the Ring Road and belongs to the industrial estate near Uni Hill, currently depicts an enormous crossword puzzle on a wall that is frequently defaced by would-be artists.

While local art critic Cameron Shillingsworth was initially impressed with the crossword mural, he now fears that it will be defaced with clever wordplay from graffiti enthusiasts. Speaking exclusively to The Watsonia Bugle, he said, “At first I just loved it. I mean, it’s great, very contemporary, yet seemingly functional at the same time. But then, when I really thought about it, this is leaving itself open for attack. If graffiti artists can find a way to scale the wall, they could really have some fun with this.”

At last check, no crossword buffs had attempted to solve the large puzzle, but Shillingsworth claimed it would only be a matter of time. He said, “Oh yeah, this won’t take long. Who knows, it could become the new ‘Megan’. It’s really leaving itself open.”
