A local Essendon fan commenced his own pre-season earlier today, in the ambitious hope of getting a game with the Bombers next year. Rick Hughes dusted his runners off for a quick jog around the block during his lunch break, following the news that Joe Daniher had joined Adam Saad in requested a trade from the beleaguered Bombers.
The second player to seek exit from the once-successful club in as many days, Daniher’s announcement has officially pushed Hughes to the brink. Speaking to The Watsonia Bugle whilst taking a quick ice bath after his run, Hughes said, “It’s been a real chocolates to boiled lollies kinda year for the Bombers hasn’t it? What a disaster. We’ll be lucky to have anyone left on the list by the end of the trade period. So, I might be a chance. I’ve just gotta get in shape.”
While it’s been a few years since the 33-year-old Hughes last pulled on the boots for a game with the Watsonia Wombats in the local league, he insisted that it wouldn’t take him too long to regain his touch. He said, “It’s just like riding a bike, haha. Mate, a couple of months training under me belt and I’ll look real good alongside Jakey Stringer in that forward line.”
