The rest of Melbourne is reportedly preparing to pay “Watsonia petrol prices” for a week, as we all head towards the annual Easter weekend petrol price hike. While our suburb’s oddly expensive petrol is usually unique to Watsonia, the remainder of Melbourne is currently bracing to pay through the nose like we do for 52 weeks of the year.
One motorist from a nearby suburb has told The Watsonia Bugle that this week gives them the chance to experience how Watsonians live all year round, before returning to normality after the Easter weekend. Doncaster resident Cameron Fleming said, “Honestly, I don’t know how you guys do it. I mean, is it really that expensive every day of the year? That’s crazy. You guys are odds on to be the first suburb to pay $2 a litre for unleaded. And it’ll be sooner than you think.”
Seemingly accustomed to Watsonia’s exorbitant petrol prices, local resident Doris Hamilton said hearing people from other suburbs complain about the cost of unleaded during this week provided an unwelcome reminder of our 365-day reality. She said, “You hear them all start complaining and moaning this week and it’s very upsetting to be honest. For the other 51 weeks of the year I’m numb to the situation, but this week always brings it home to roost, and that really gets my knickers in a twist.”
